The Story Of Prayer Textile Gallery

Who We Are

Prayer Textile Gallery is an established family-owned boutique founded in the heart of Bangkok since 1964. The word ‘Prayer’ comes from a Thai word for silk, a fabric that has a very deep history in Thai culture. As a brand, we have always tried to bring to the forefront, textiles from Thai and neighbouring regions, transforming them into everyday wearable garments, whilst retaining the work of tradition and the history of each piece. Prayer Textile Gallery is well known for the intricate signature ‘Art Jacket’. Many have said that it is a jacket that chooses the wearer, if it belongs to you, you will know.

The Beginning

Founder Nongkran Suanduenchai first opened Prayer Textile Gallery as a dress-making school after she returned from her scholarship in the subject from Germany. As Mrs. Nong continued to expand her portfolio by moving to Chiang Mai and managing the construction of traditional Thai houses for her clients, the store remained a family run business managed by her two daughters, Marisa Bürkle and Napajaree Suanduenchai. There, the sisters pioneered the use of Hill tribe fabrics and traditional Thai fabrics in modern design.

Where We Are Now

A trained painter, Apirom Somlit has been the resident artist and designer at Prayer Textile Gallery for 10 years under the guidance of co-founder and creative director, the late Marisa Bürkle. Born and educated in Chiang Mai, Apirom believes that “art is a thing of beauty that can transfer a feeling of joy when received by the viewer”. He is the current lead creative force behind the brand. Now in its third, Thai-German generation, Prayer Textile Gallery looks to integrate its international understanding into the brand. Together with local creators and makers, our goal is to continue to share Thai art and textiles with new generations.
